The Dichotomy of Rigid Foam
The Dichotomy of Rigid Foam
I can't tell you how many times a month I get a call from local gym teacher looking for foam mats that they can use in their gym. I have to explain to them, that yes we do sell polyurethane foam, but it is hard foam - no "cushionability." Well what do you use that for, is a typical response. What don't we use it for?!
The first iteration of Elliott Foam or ELFOAM was used as insulation. Walk in coolers & freezers, insulated trailers, laminated wall panels, even fishing coolers. With an R-value of 6 per inch, we had a solid product. As time went on, people started finding other uses for our foam. The orthotic and prosthetic market started shaping our foam. That led to other artists evaluating our material for prop making. Companies started asking to use our foam to make molds & plugs for their CNC applications. Elliott Company decided to expand their product offerings by manufacturing 3, 4 and 6 lbs./ft3 higher density ELFOAM products.
More and more people have found uses for our foam. We were an early player in the composites industry by providing a core material that had excellent compatibility with resins, glass and glues. Our product was 95% closed cell so they were found to absorb what was needed but not more. It could hold a shape, but still be lightweight. We could perforate the foam and use it in vacuum applications to create really strong parts. Manufacturing the foam in large blocks allowed us to cut it down into usable shapes for our customers. We have also discovered that our foam doesn't interfere with radio frequencies. This allows us to be a component in radomes, UAVs, platforms, and other industries utilizing satellite communications.
So when I'm on the phone with my local gym teacher, sadly I'm not able to give them any mats. But I'm sure my ELFOAM could provide them with something else useful - they just don't know it yet.
