My 6 Learnings from 6 Months with #CarbonFiber
🏑 Formerly known to me mainly through my field hockey stick, it is used in many areas of energy and mobility due to its material properties - light and strong (among others).
📈 Since weight and stability play a major role in the energy transition, lightweight construction, and especially composites, have huge potential. Think hydrogen tanks and UAVs.
🏭 The production of the fibers is quite CO2-intensive, and the current automation level of the industry is rather low. See the link in the comment to see what the German government wants to do about it.
♻️ It is a composite, consisting of the actual fiber and a resin system. Until about 2 years ago, it was hardly possible to break this bond again and recycle the materials. Now luckily, more and more recyclable resin systems are evolving.
️
⛔️ Existing manufacturing and recycling practices are not sustainable at all. Some parts like the rotor blades of wind turbines (which should kinda resemble renewability) are still landfilled, and other components are downcycled at best.
〰️ The strength of the fiber is mainly determined by the fiber length. So cutting it won't cut it.
That is why we at Holy Technologies rethink how we handle carbon fiber to unlock its full potential. Want to know more? Check out holy-technologies.com
As a business graduate, I had to learn a lot about this great material and the possibilities of lightweight manufacturing, and I really enjoy passing that on and learning more. Keen to hear your thoughts on my learnings!
